More than 100 students work in Student Media creating award-winning products and publications. Responsibilities and schedules for staff positions vary, as does the level of experience required. Many freshmen find wonderful ways to gain experience and explore their interests; with opportunities for advancement, students often stay in the department throughout their college "career."
Primary hiring times are in the late spring and late fall. Students seeking summer and fall positions are encouraged to apply by April 20; persons interested in spring semester positions should apply by November 15.

Student Media departments
The Oklahoma Daily/OUDaily.com offers a variety of positions related to the day-to-day operations of producing one of the nation’s top student newspapers and Web sites. The staff is arranged by sections — campus/news, life and arts, sports, opinion, photo, copy/night desk and online/multimedia — and can be found in the newsroom from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. five days a week. Daily alums receive internship and job offers from across the country and have gone on to work at The Washington Post, The New York Times, ESPN, The Dallas Morning News and hundreds of national and international media companies.
Sooner yearbook and Sower magazine make up Student Media’s Features area. Staff for both publications create magazine-style products for the OU community. Staffers are divided into “desks”: writing, design and photo. Sooner is consistently ranked one of the best yearbooks in the country; Sower has recently evolved from an annual freshman publication to a general-interest student magazine. OU’s annual Visitor Guide is also produced by Features. With real-world experience on their resumes, Features’ alums have interned and worked at Every Day with Rachael Ray, Spirit magazine, The Washington Post, D Magazine, Parents, People and more magazines, newspapers and media organizations across the country.
Our Advertising students sell and design ads for The Oklahoma Daily/OUDaily.com, Sower and a variety of [m] special sections. Students sell more than $1 million in advertising, design thousands of ads and work with more than 500 clients annually. If you’re interested in any part of advertising or sales, this is the home for you. Advertising alumni work in a variety of sales, marketing, design and PR jobs, including Bernstein-Rein, Cultura, The Wall Street Journal and Cultura.
Production (labeled prepress/IT on our application) does the behind-the-scenes work for many of our publications: creating page dummies, shipping publications to the printer and handling many of Student Media’s IT responsibilities. Production alums are prepared for a variety of media jobs, and some of our graduates have worked with National Geographic and The Wall Street Journal.
Students Available OU Student Media employees offer a variety of experience in the daily workings of media production, from reporting and copy editing, to design, photography, advertising, online and more.
Students are available for internships during their college tenure, as well as employment after graduation. If you are looking for interns or employees, please contact Lori Brooks, associate director, at 405-325-2521 or studentmedia(AT)ou(DOT)edu.
